Typographic Design Text and its relationship with design. Type styles and suitability, kerning, leading, grids and layouts. QuarkXPress and book typesetting
Desktop Publishing Application of knowledge learnt in earlier modules to create chapters of a book in QuarkXPress
Culture of Publishing The culture and ideology of publishing in terms of its development during the twentieth century, its contemporary practice and likely future developments
Electronic Publishing Group proposal and concept (using Dreamweaver and Photoshop) for a new website, plus a report discussing the importance of design and other issues such as competition and copyright
New Title Development From an existing publisher’s academic list and working as a team, proposal for a new title: author research, market analysis and competition, USPs, publicity and promotion, budgets, estimated sales and profit

Foundations of Intelligent Systems An introductory look at computing and artificial intelligence
Computers in Organisations Rather than taking a technical aspect of computing, this module investigated the general effect of computers in the workplace both through theory and a project on Kew Gardens’ publishing department
Structured Programming and Software Development Introduction to programming and good writing techniques
Introduction to Software Engineering Exploration of how large systems are designed and developed with use of definitions and specifications, life cycles, modelling (logical systems, data flow diagrams, process diagrams), high and low-level design, testing methods
Data structures An in-depth look at common data structures and algorithms such as stacks, hash tables, pointers and recursion
Information Systems Analysis and Design Building on Introduction to Software Engineering, a detailed study into the many methods used to define the problem then design it properly before starting any programming
Object-Orientated System Construction Consideration of where OOP programming can be useful, its problems and other methods also in use
Computer Networks Eight weeks’ intensive study into computer connections, starting with general communications architectures then delving deeper into physical transmission methods (circuits, packets, VPNs etc.), protocols (network and Internet, IP/TCP), routers and bridges, and IP addressing
Multimedia Application Design Creation of a website, placing the emphasis on multimedia elements (Flash, audio, video etc.) and programming (HTML, JavaScript and ASP)
Computing Project A large project to provide an artwork system using Visual Basic for the user interface and Access as the underlying database
